IMHO, Willy Deville was one of the great interpreters of American Music. As a journeyman performer, Willy found greater acceptance and popularity in Europe than in the U.S. He was a genuine shape changer, a man who could fit comfortably into variety of musical clothing from punk, too blues, too doo wop, too ragi'n cajun, too blazing latino rhythms. He could write hot rockers, lovely ballads, and ethnic tunes with equal ease, or make an old standard his own, all fashioned by his keen musical sensibilities. There were no barriers in Willy's wide path.
This incarnation of the Willy Deville Band featured Freddie Koella on guitar, David Keyes on Bass , Boris "Badinov" Kinberg on percussion and Dorine and Yadona Wise on backup vocals. The band plays with the kind of relaxed confidence which only comes from years of performing live together.
America's great loss came when Willy died of pancreatic cancer on August 6th, 2009 at the age of 58. If you don't know about Willy DeVille look him up on the Net. It will be time well spent.................
